Recognizing that each child is a unique human being with individual needs and interests, the Lower School strives to help each girl develop her potential by providing programs designed to fit her own style of learning. These needs and interests are met through hands-on experiences in math and science, problem solving in cooperative learning activities, and a reading and writing program which combines a literature-based and phonetic approach. Through these and other techniques planned with girls in mind, our students learn that they have the ability to solve problems, to ask questions, to make discoveries, and to find answers for themselves. In so doing they build a strong foundation for developing self-confidence and a positive self-esteem.

In 1940 at the age of 65, Miss Hockaday purchased a country home called Green Gates Farm. She raised turkeys there and frequently invited classes to visit for recreation and exercise.
