Tenets of Coaching Excellence

The Hockaday School seeks athletic coaches who exemplify high ideals and who employ the best practices that are hallmarks of excellence. Coaches of excellence actively promote the mission and priorities of The Hockaday School, educating young women to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in a rapidly changing, interconnected world. They strongly support single-gender education and understand how girls learn best. They value and respect their colleagues and further School-wide, divisional, and departmental goals.

Tenets of Coaching Excellence

  • Coaches of excellence enrich the learning environment because they possess a generous spirit and a positive attitude.

    They act as team players, serve as self-starters, and address the needs of the girls with a positive approach and outlook. 
  • Coaches of excellence exemplify and promote strong ethical principles in the school community.

    Their high moral standards, honorable behavior, and personal integrity govern their deliberations and actions.  All coaches serve as role models for inspiring and helping athletes to attain excellence both on and off the field of play. 
  • Coaches of excellence have a passion for coaching their sport and for developing strong minded and well-rounded young girls.

    Their overt enthusiasm and energy results in athletes looking forward to participating in practice and games.  They continually look for ways to enhance their coaching to align with school culture and develop skills that will improve the individual athlete while promoting an excellent team environment.
  • Coaches of excellence inspire athletes to excel beyond measures, to develop critical skills for problem solving, and to learn how to actively work together toward a common goal.

  • Coaches of excellence continually seek improvement.

    They continually ask themselves if there is a more effective way to coach that would make learning skills relevant and enjoyable for their athletes. They attend clinics, consult colleagues, and look for professional development opportunities that will grow their coaching.
  • Coaches of excellence partner with athletes, colleagues, and parents in the learning process.

    They are “seen” as available.” Coaches communicate proactively and effectively with regard to guidelines for their program, schedules, travel, and expectations for the athletes and parents. 
  • Coaches of excellence use a variety of techniques to reach their athletes.

    They look for ways to obtain feedback from their athletes in order to evaluate their overall coaching; including style, communication effectiveness, skill development, and their ability to relate well with their athletes.
