Message from the Head of Upper School
Welcome to Hockaday’s Upper School,

During the Upper School years, students strive to answer the question “who am I?” By encouraging our students to explore their interests and to pursue in depth those areas that are most meaningful to them, Hockaday’s academic, athletic, fine arts, and co-curricular programs provide students with opportunities to answer that essential question.
In addition to varied opportunities, our students work closely with talented educators. Teachers in Upper School believe in girls and respect the women they become. They challenge the girls to go beyond preconceived boundaries while supporting them as they take risks and strive to improve. Teachers work one-on-one with students, they serve as Advisors, and they often sponsor one of the sixty clubs available to the girls throughout the year.

The Four Cornerstones – Courtesy, Character, Scholarship, and Athletics – influence all that we do in Upper School. Through the Community Service program, a commitment to the Honor Code, and leadership experiences, our students internalize the behaviors of courtesy and character with as much purpose as they develop their capacity as scholars, athletes, and artists.

A day in Upper School provides opportunities for our students to engage fully with the community, to strive beyond what they thought possible, to explore their interests, and to be a part of a community that encourages one to be her best self.
If you have an opportunity to spend time on campus, we look forward to sharing our experience with you.

John Ashton
