Fourth grade language arts students participated in a personal essay contest sponsored by Scholastic.
Fourth grade language arts students participated in a personal essay contest sponsored by Scholastic entitled "Breaking Barriers." Students learned how major league baseball legend Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, and how he overcame the harsh reality of his circumstances. Fourth grader Lily Forbes was named one of 30 Major League Baseball prize package winners in the contest. She will receive a prize package including: a class set of tickets to a local MLB Club stadium; a framed winner certificate; a class set of T-shirts; and other prizes.
“The girls surpassed my expectations by sharing their own real personal barriers and explaining how they used one or more of Jackie Robinson's nine values—courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence—to face this barrier in an essay,” said fourth grade language arts teacher, Tresa Wilson.
Wilson also conducted a Hockaday fourth grade essay contest utilizing the same topic of breaking barriers. The winners for the school contest are:
