Team MECCAS Dominates at the FIRST LEGO League Championships

Middle School students Meredith Jones, Clarissa Fuentes, Sarah Crow, Audrey Martin, and Swiler Boyd (Team MECCAS) entered the 2014 FIRST LEGO League CLASSSM Challenge last fall, and had a fantastic showing at the North Texas Regional Championship Tournament on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Parish Episcopal.

The MECCAS competed against 250 teams to make it to the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) championship tournament where they competed against 51 other teams in four categories: Robot Game, Robot Design, Core Values, and Project. The girls were one of the top six teams called back for Core Values and were one of the top three teams in the Project category. Ultimately they won the prestigious Project Award for Research. This award recognizes a team that utilizes diverse resources to formulate an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the problem they have identified. The girls investigated the best ways to help students learn how to type. The judges remarked on how incredibly thorough the girls’ research was and that their research was in a class of its own. They even recommended that the girls take their textured typing skins global, using a site such as Pinterest!

LEGO league takes a tremendous amount of time – on average 4 hours a week. The MECCAS worked together for two 30-minute periods during a six-day rotation during the school day, and 5-hour periods on the weekends, after school, over holidays, and any other time they could find. Congratulations to the girls for all their hard work!
