Lower School

Learning Support

At the Lower School level, Hockaday students may benefit from Learning Support in a variety of ways:
 
Early intervention based on results of assessments conducted throughout the Lower School experience.
  • Reading
    • Classroom Benchmark Assessments
    • Phonological Awareness PK-6 years old
    • Skills/Content PK-Grade 4
    • Speech and Language PK-Grade 2
    • Spelling Grades 1-4
    • Word Recognition, Fluency, and Comprehension Ages 6-Grade 4
  • Math
    • Curriculum-Based Assessments
    • Skills/Content PK-Grade 4
  • Milestones Standardized Assessment
    • Reading Comprehension and Math Grades 3-4
 
Provision of academic accommodation plans for classroom use and standardized testing when a documented learning challenge exists. A student may receive accommodations within the Hockaday program to assist with equal access to learning if a documented challenge to learning is present. Documentation is required and must be provided before accommodations can be considered. Support for students with accommodations is provided according to student need.
  • Academic Language Therapy,  Occupational Therapy and/or Speech Therapy
    Provided on-site via independently contracted therapists vetted by Hockaday
  • Classroom Support
    Support and monitoring of accommodations provided through general classrooms
  • Lower School Learning Lab
    A reading/spelling-based classroom led by our Lower School Reading Specialist and supplemented with general classroom accommodations
