Summer 2022 Lower School (Grades 1-2)

General Information

Welcome to Summer at Hockaday 2022!

Lower School in-person camps and classes will take place in weekly, half-day sessions with a few full-day options, as noted in the schedule. Registrations will close at 11:59 pm every Wednesday for the upcoming week to allow us to make preparations for new groups of participants.

Explorations Camps & Classes

Lower School Explorations offers weekly in-person camps and classes girls and boys entering Grades 1 through 4. Programs offer a variety of activities and enrichment that span a wide range of interests. Classes are offered as half-day options with the opportunity to create a full-day of programming by selecting a morning and an afternoon program. Campers who participate in a morning and an afternoon program will eat lunch at Hockaday for an additional fee. Summer at Hockaday faculty and staff will manage all transitions of participants moving from camps to lunch

Register for multiple weeks to create a summer experience of creative learning and enrichment! 

Explorations takes place in person June 6 through July 22 with morning sessions occuring 9:00 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions occurring 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Lunch takes place from noon to 12:30 p.m. Before and After Care is available for an additional fee.

  • Adventures in STEM using Lego®

    Ratchet up your imagination with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Build engineer-designed projects such as: Space Stations, Fire Trucks, and the Eiffel Tower. Design and build as never before and explore your craziest ideas. LEGO® camps are offered in partnership with Play-Well TEKnologies.

  • Afternoon Book Club

    This reading class will look at classic stories by using a fun performance style, reader’s theatre. You will explore the power of your own voice to bring characters to life right off the page with no pressure, because there is no heavy memorization required. Imagine giving voice to a woodland creature or creating thoughts for the leader of the townspeople. Public speaking exercises, theatre games, and improv will all be used as part of the fun.

  • American Girl Camp

    Travel through time with your favorite American Girl stories! We will explore aspects of American history through this popular series. Come enjoy a week of crafts, acting, reading, hands-on activities, and much more. Your doll is invited to join you for all the fun!

  • Animals Around the World

    Calling all animal lovers! We will explore animals, common and rare, from around the world. Learn about endangered species, family pets, and more as we dive into all things wild and tame through research, stories, arts 'n crafts, and habitat studies.

  • Brain Games & Puzzles

    Learn about one of the largest and most complex organs of our body – the brain. We will learn the anatomy of the brain, how it functions and also understand how the brain can be manipulated using brain-teasing magic puzzles. We will challenge our brains with problem-solving activities and brain teasers. Come join us and sharpen your skills!

  • Camp Invention

    Camp Invention is where BIG ideas become the next BIG thing! Join us this summer for our brand new curriculum - EXPLORE! Local educators lead the week of hands-on activities as boys and girls spend time exploring brand-new themes: Spacecation, Robotic Aquatics, The Attic, and Marble Arcade.  Lessons explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Don’t miss out on brand new challenges.

    With so many fun dance styles available, how do you pick just one? In Dance Camp, you can pick them all! Each week will include a variety of dance styles.     Come join our fun and knowledgeable Play-Well Instructors as we use LEGO® materials to build and interact with our favorite fairy tales! Help Cinderella make it back before midnight, fly with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, and ensure Alice outwits the Queen of Hearts.   • First Bike Ride

    Coach Stewart Ball and his staff of coaches have taught hundreds of children to ride a bike. Let us teach you to ride in this popular, low pressure, enjoyable class. All you need is a bike, helmet, water bottle, and snack. Bikes can be kept on campus throughout the week's class.

  • First Grade Prep Camp

    Is your child ready for 1st grade? This camp is a fun yet purposeful camp offered for children that will be entering 1st Grade in the fall. Students will prepare for the next grade by sharpening their phonological awareness, phonics, writing, basic math skills, and social skills.

  • Fit Kids Workout Club

    Ready, set, soar! The key to excelling in all sports is speed and/or endurance and proper form. With the coach's guidance, you will set personal goals and strive each day to reach them along with participating in cross training, fun runs, and relays with other campers. Fitness games, group games, and more fun activities will be incorporated in the daily schedule. Our coaches will work on specific technique to improve your form as a runner and help increase your speed and endurance. Come soar with us!

  • Indoor Rock Climbing

    Directed by Coach Stewart Ball, this popular camp will be hosted by Movement, The Hill, a newly opened climbing gym and fitness facility located at Walnut Hill and US-75. We’re very excited to be using this beautiful new gym! Camp will feature instruction in basic bouldering from one of Movement’s expert instructors and we have added more agility, fitness, and coordination activities and games, to round out an exhilarating week of camp. Space is limited, so don’t miss out!

  • Jedi Engineering Strikes Back using Lego®

    This is the way! Get ready to embark on your LEGO® journey as we defend the Wookies on Kashyyyk, repair the Rebel shield generator on Hoth, and rescue Baby Yoda from Moff Gideon. Come explore a galaxy far, far away with the help of an experienced Play-Well instructor and learn which "Force" is actually with us!     Have fun, make friends, feel special, focus on magic, fun, and learning. The magic makes the fun happen; the fun makes the learning easy. We will create our own magic with crafts, practice, demonstration, and fun. All props and materials are provided and by the end of class, each student will have the knowledge and ability to perform their tricks for their friends and family.   • Minecraft U

    This is the Minecraft camp for you! Minecraft U follows a progressive curriculum focused on learning computer skills, problem solving, planning and building, but it's Minecraft, so it's always going to be fun! We emphasize cooperative play and teach game etiquette. Included in the camp tuition is one year of access to our Minecraft monitored server, which allows campers continued access to their projects. Our staff is comprised of computer scientists, teachers, and software developers who also enjoy gaming and Minecraft.

  • My First Lemonade Stand

    Let's sell lemonade!  Young campers become "lemonade entrepreneurs" and learn how to make yummy lemonade and earn money selling it!  From designing marketing flyers to estimating profits to experimenting with recipes, campers have fun all week while developing business savvy.  Campers launch the lemonade stand on Friday to raise money for a charity they select! My First Lemonade Stand is offered in partnership with SPARK business academy.

    Is your child ready for 2nd grade? This camp is a fun yet purposeful camp offered for children that will be entering 2nd Grade in the fall. Students will prepare for the next grade by sharpening their reading, writing, and math skills.

  • Space Camp

    This camp is for those who are fascinated with all things SPACE! This science-based camp will explore the elements of space, create space-themed projects and snacks, and will explore a day in the life of an astronaut. Stars, planets, comets, and more - there is no limit to the great beyond!

    In this camp, we will enjoy classic and contemporary stories and follow the stories with crafts that express our analysis and reaction to the story's characters and message. Bring your favorite story to share with your camp friends. Reading and creating will merge into fun in this brand-new camp!

  • Summer Musical Theater: A Year with Frog & Toad

    Summer at Hockaday's musical theater is for all who have an interest in musical theater. No experience is necessary. Come have a blast with us as we produce A Year with Frog and Toad KIDS on stage! This whimsical show follows two great friends - the cheerful, popular Frog, and the rather grumpy Toad - through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation, Frog and Toad plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding, and learn life lessons along the way. Throughout the year, two best friends celebrate and rejoice in the differences that make them unique and special. Adapted from the three-time-Tony-nominated Broadway hit and based on Arnold Lobel's well-loved books, the jazzy, upbeat score bubbles with melody. Part vaudeville, part make-believe, and all charm!

    Level up your LEGO® Engineering skills in this arcade-inspired experience. Our Play-Well instructors are here to help make your favorite video game adventures a reality. Using LEGO®, we can build go-karts to race Mario, blast asteroids with Star Fox, build neighborhoods with your favorite friends from Animal Crossing, and join Link to restore peace to Hyrule. All the fun of an arcade adventure with no screen necessary! LEGO® camps are offered in partnership with Play-Well TEKnologies.

  • Young Philanthropists

    Campers internalize the benefits of doing well and doing good, reviewing a number of charities and discussing the merits of giving back. Students collaborate in small teams to select a charity or issue they feel passionate about and come up with practical ways they can support that cause (including raising awareness, volunteering and fundraising), then create their own mock foundation! Yount Philanthropists is offered in partnership with SPARK business academy.

Kaleidoscope Day Camp

Summer at Hockaday's longstanding day camp now has a new name. Kalediscope Day Camp's two-week sessions will have a variety of activities to include imaginative play, critical thinking, creative expression, outdoor exploring, cooking, science, and much more. Each session will center around fun and engaging themes. Each two-week session will differ from previous sessions, so join us for multiple sessions! 

Lunch is included in the tuition for Kaleidoscope Day Camp.

Camp Invention is where BIG ideas become the next BIG thing! Join us this summer for our brand new curriculum - EXPLORE! Local educators lead the week of hands-on activities as boys and girls spend time exploring brand-new themes: Spacecation, Robotic Aquatics, The Attic, and Marble Arcade.  Lessons explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation.
