General Information

Summer at Hockaday offers a variety of coed camps and classes for students entering Grades 5 through 10. Programs are offered as one-week sessions. Combine programs and create an awesome summer full of academics, arts, and enrichment totaling up to 7 weeks!

Registrations will close at 11:59 pm every Wednesday for the upcoming week to allow us to make preparations for new groups of participants.

Camp Invention - EXPLORE!

Camp Invention is where BIG ideas become the next BIG thing! Join us this summer for our brand new curriculum - EXPLORE! Local educators lead the week of hands-on activities as boys and girls spend time exploring brand-new themes: Spacecation, Robotic Aquatics, The Attic, and Marble Arcade.  Lessons explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Summer Math & Writing Institute

The Summer Math Institute provides students exposure to a variety of math concepts based on an overarching theme. Students will be exposed to as many topics each week as is achievable in a fun and interactive experience. Students will be organized according to ability, which will allow students to progress at an appropriate pace.

The Summer Writing Institute will include a thematic approach to writing, drawing from a variety of literary fiction and non-fiction sources. Short works will be analyzed to identify theme, structure, punctuation, diction, and figurative language Students will respond to pieces through prose and/or poetry, creating original writings for peer review. The depth and focus of courses taught will vary according to grade level to achieve grade-appropriate instruction and challenge.

Participation in weekly sessions will give students the opportunity to continue strengthening math and writing skills; thus, students are encouraged to register for multiple weeks.

Counselor-in-Training Program (CIT)

The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is taught by experienced teachers who have a breadth of knowledge in the realm of volunteerism, child development, and classroom management. As a CIT, you will have the opportunity to learn what it takes to be a counselor through hands-on experience and practice. You will spend a portion of the session with other CITs learning the skills necessary to allow you to serve as a volunteer, which you will then experience first-hand in segments of our Summer at Hockaday camps and classes. Through this program, you are certain to enhance citizenship and leadership skills. Delve into volunteerism, all while having fun, enhancing teamwork, and gaining real-world experience! After completing the one-week training session, you will spend additional weeks volunteering within Summer at Hockaday camps and classes. You will quickly develop your own fan club as our campers and students adore our CITs!

The CIT program is limited to 12 participants. All participants must attend the training sessions held either the week of June 6-10 or the week of June 13-17 and select a minimum of four additional weeks to serve as a CIT. Community service hours will be calculated for each participant.

  • 3D Digital Art: Design & Modeling with Tinker CAD

    Dream it. Design it. Create it! This program will introduce you to the basics of 3D design and architecture, with a focus on designing real world objects, 3D buildings and provide an introduction to creating basic characters. Participants will use TinkerCAD software to create 3D designs. Then, work together as a team of innovators to engineer cool three-dimensional cityscapes and other objects, devices, or gadgets. Find your inner 3D artist as we conceptualize and realize our own multidimensional art.  No prior experience is necessary! All skill levels are welcome. 3D Digital Art: Design & Modeling with Tinker CAD is offered in partnership with Fleming Tech Camps.

    Use your creativity while learning about pottery and sculpture using the 3 main hand-building techniques. Get the chance to make unique ceramic artworks tailored to your personal interests in this brand-new camp!

    GOAL! Are you ready to make your voice heard around the world? In this exciting offering, our instructors will help you learn to become the audio backdrop to your favorite sports & esports moments.  We have lots of fun activities in store for fans who are ready to learn about recording, editing, and livestreaming their own voiceovers, rants and highlight commentary.   • Esports: Fortnite

    In this esports program, competitors will develop and practice strategies that will prepare them to compete against other gamers in Fortnite. The main goal of the Fortnite esports program is to introduce good habits and strategies. Competitors will work together as a team to learn cooperative strategies, effective communication, prime routes on the map, and practice self-assessement skills. Using these techniques, our participants will be able to take their game to the next level on their way to the victory. Esports: Fortnite is offered in partnership with Fleming Tech Camps.

  • Esports: Minecraft STEM Battles

    This Minecraft esports program is similar to LEGO First robotics, and other academic competition clubs, and offers a new way to challenge players. In this esports program, competitors will be tasked with analysing and solving complex science & engineering problems and using Minecraft to demonstrate their solutions. Teams will compete against each other by building & coding academic solutions within Minecraft Education Edition. However, like a traditional game competition, teams must also play offense & defense, sending out scouts to interrupt their competitors. Esports: Minecraft STEM Battles is offered in partnership with Fleming Tech Camps.

    In the Rocket League esports program you will learn the moves, strategies, pro tips and tricks to compete against other kids in this hard-hitting game. Rocket League is a high-powered hybrid gaming experience that features arcade-style soccer action, where each team uses their skills and wit to try and beat their competitors.   • EV3 Robotics (Lego®)

    Rise to the challenge to build and program robots using the LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 system! Learn about mechanical and software design, loops, conditional statements, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Design and construct your robot to avoid obstacles, pick up and carry objects, and play sounds. Projects are structured so that students work in an open-ended, investigative environment while having fun. LEGO® camps are offered in partnership with Play-Well TEKnologies.

  • Fortnite: Creating & Coding 3D Games

    If you love 3D-based video games and want to explore how to make them, then this camp is for you! Fortnite: Creating and Coding 3D Games is a camp experience designed for kids who are interested in learning more about game design and who are interested in getting a basic introduction to programming. In this camp, you'll dive deep into learning about how to use Fortnite's Creative Mode and focus on learning about variables, functions, conditional statements, loops and triggers. Our daily build and code challenges will help you hone your programming and design skills and provide you with a feeling for what it's like to be a real game developer. Fortnite: Creating & Coding 3D Games is offered in partnership with Fleming Tech Camps.

    Middle School is a time when most girls are finding their voice, their way, and their hair tie! It's a time of complete internal chaos and sheer delight. Shanterra McBride of Marvelous University and Brooklyn Raney of One Trusted Adult will partner again for this exciting camp, a week-long experience where each will girl will be seen, listened to (even if her voice isn't the loudest), liked, and laughed with -- because we LOVE a good laugh!

    Girls will learn: (1) the art of creating the perfect friendship, (2) how to take the brave risk, even if her legs shake, (3) how to celebrate body changes, (4) how to lead, even if no one follows, and (5) how to speak up, even when she feels no one is listening.

    Girls Leadership Camp will give her the real definition of leadership and give her the opportunity to embrace it NOW!

    Girls in this camp will use the Ripple Journal during the week to learn and grow by doodling, writing, drawing, reflecting, discussing, and setting goals.

  • Minecraft Coding: Adventures in Python

    This program explores the principles of coding through writing and editing code with Python, a common programming language, used to modify Minecraft. Participants will be provided with an understanding of computer coding by creating programs that change, or mod, how Minecraft works. This program uses Minecraft Education Edition, which provides participants with the ability to code, mod and play test their code all at the same time while using Python to solves a series of fun puzzles and challenges. The Code Builder program is designed for participants familiar with basic coding concepts, or who may also have some prior experience with Scratch or other block coding tools. All skill levels welcome, some computer and keyboarding experience is recommended. Minecraft Coding: Adventures in Python is offered in partnership with Fleming Tech Camps.

  • Music Studio using Garage Band

    It has never been easier to create amazing-sounding digital music with a minimum to no knowledge of music theory. Using Garage Band, students will learn how to create digital music and develop an understanding of the different ways digital music is utilized. This brand-new fun and creative camp carries a technical emphasis on production and critical-listening skills.

    Campers select a food truck theme, design menus, estimate expenses, determine prices and develop financial projections.  They develop a business plan with a marketing strategy, capital-raising needs and more.  A tasty way to develop business savvy!   • Roblox: Coding & Scripting

    Take your Roblox games to the next level by learning how to modify your games and obbys by writing customized code. Using Roblox Studio as your game engine, participants will create and customize game levels and obbys to learn how to edit and writing LUA code scripts. If you are new to writing or editing code, LUA is scripting language used in Roblox that involves the process of creating special commands that can modify how the Roblox game works. In this program you will learn about LUA, write scripts that modify Roblox and create your own code for your unique experiences. LUA is a very approachable programming language and isn't as complex as Java or C++, however we recommend that participants have some computer experience and be able to read and follow instructions. Roblox: Coding & Scripting is offered in partnership with Fleming Tech Camps.

  • Science of Minecraft: Chemistry & Physics

    Do you have a curiosity about science, chemistry and physics? This program was created to teach participants about these exciting STEM topics using Minecraft as the laboratory to design, craft and test experiments through virtual simulations. In our physics lessons, participants will learn about the science of kinetic and potential energy, speed, acceleration, and gravity. Our chemistry lessons will teach participants about atoms, molecules and elements. The chemistry labs will explore the periodic table and create tests to see how the chemicals react - participants will create compounds using molecules and focus on "reactions" by creating things like sparklers, glowsticks, and floating balloons.  In this program participants work toward building the ultimate scientific laboratory in our virtual campground to build and test scientific concepts through science-themed builds. No prior experience is necessary! All skill levels are welcome. Minecraft: Chemistry & Physics is offered in partnership with Fleming Tech Camps.

  • Summer Musical Theater: A Year with Frog & Toad

    Summer at Hockaday's musical theater is for all who have an interest in musical theater. No experience is necessary. Come have a blast with us as we produce A Year with Frog and Toad KIDS on stage! This whimsical show follows two great friends - the cheerful, popular Frog, and the rather grumpy Toad - through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation, Frog and Toad plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding, and learn life lessons along the way. Throughout the year, two best friends celebrate and rejoice in the differences that make them unique and special. Adapted from the three-time-Tony-nominated Broadway hit and based on Arnold Lobel's well-loved books, the jazzy, upbeat score bubbles with melody. Part vaudeville, part make-believe, and all charm!

  • World Peace Game

    Join us for this brand new offering! The World Peace Game is a hands-on political simulation. Four countries are pitted against each other as students take on the roles of prime ministers, UN officials, World Bank members, and more. The object is to achieve world peace and global prosperity by challenging students with 50 interlocking crises such as hurricanes, oil spills, refugee asylum, and food shortages while under the threat of war.
