Summer at Hockaday offers a variety of coed camps and classes for students entering Grades 5 through 8. Programs are offered as one-week sessions. Combine programs and create an awesome summer full of academics, arts, and enrichment totaling up to 7 weeks!

Registrations will close at 11:59 p.m. every Thursday for the upcoming week to allow us to prepare for new groups of participants.

Camp Invention - WONDER!

A SUMMER AT HOCKADAY FAVORITE!
 
Camp Invention is where BIG ideas become the next BIG thing! Join us this summer for our brand-new curriculum - WONDER! Local educators lead the week of hands-on activities as boys and girls spend time exploring brand-new themes: Catching Air, Invention Celebration, Mimicbot, and Pop-Up Venture. Lessons explore connections between science, technology, engineering, and innovation. Don’t miss out on brand new challenges. 

Camp Invention is a creation of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Summer Math & Writing Institute

The Summer Math Institute provides students exposure to a variety of  math skills based on an overarching theme. Students will have the opportunity to practice defined skills each week in a fun and interactive experience.

The Summer Writing Institute will include a thematic approach to writing, drawing from a variety of literary fiction and non-fiction sources. Short works will be analyzed to identify theme, structure, punctuation, diction, and figurative language Students will respond to pieces through prose and/or poetry, creating original writings for peer review. The depth and focus of courses taught will vary according to grade level to achieve grade-appropriate instruction and challenge.

Participation in multiple sessions is encouraged.

Counselor-in-Training Program (CIT)

Do you know a rising 9th or 10th grade student looking for a summer opportunity?
 
Summer at Hockaday's popular Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is a valued opportunity for students entering Grades 9 and 10. The CIT program is taught by experienced teachers who have a breadth of knowledge in the realm of volunteerism, team building, child development, and classroom management. As a CIT, you will have the opportunity to learn what it takes to be a counselor through hands-on experience and practice. You will spend a portion of the session with other CITs teambuilding and learning the skills necessary to allow you to serve as a volunteer, which you will then experience first-hand in selected camps offered by Summer at Hockaday.

Through this program, you are certain to enhance your sense of citizenship and to grow your leadership skills. Delve into volunteerism, all while having fun, enhancing teamwork, and gaining real-world experience!

After completing the one-week training session, you will spend additional weeks volunteering within Summer at Hockaday camps and classes. You will quickly develop your own fan club as our campers and students adore our CITs!

The CIT program is limited to 12 participants. All participants must attend the training sessions held either June 12-16 or June 23-23 and select a minimum of three additional weeks to serve as a CIT. Community service hours will be calculated for each participant.

  • 2D Digital Art: Pixels and Sprites

    Do you enjoy creating 2D art and want to explore how to create cool pixel art and build character sprites? Using digital art tools, this program will focus on creating art inspired by classic video games, animations and webtoons. Our instructors will teach participants how to design and create 2D pixel objects and character sprites and bring them to life with simple animation techniques. Participants will create their pixel art on a device using software designed specifically for pixel art and sprites. Participants can expect to make 2D character sprites inspired by their favorite video games as well as create pixel-based replicas of life-like backgrounds, items, or structures, and to create our own unique character(s). No experience is required, this is perfect for fans of 2D video games and pixel graphic art style.

  • 3D Digital Art: Designing and Modeling with Tinkercad

    Dream it. Design it. Create it! This program will introduce you to the basics of 3D design and architecture, with a focus on designing real world objects, 3D buildings and introducing creating basic objects. Participants will use Tinkercad software to create 3D designs. Then, work together as a team of innovators to engineer cool three-dimensional cityscapes and other objects, devices, or gadgets. Find your inner 3D artist as we conceptualize and realize our own multidimensional art. No prior experience is necessary! All skill levels are welcome.

    3D Digital Art: Designing and Modeling with Tinkercad is offered in partnership with Fleming Tech Camps.

    Use your creativity while learning about pottery and sculpture using the 3 main hand-building techniques. Get the chance to make unique ceramic artworks tailored to your personal interests in this brand-new camp!

    Learn how to design and create your own comics/webcomics. Invent interesting stories and characters while discovering layouts, storyboarding, and color theory techniques. Dream up exciting adventures or a thrilling mystery to illustrate in this creative and fun camp!

  • Art Camp: Concept Design

    Create innovative concept art while learning traditional methods of visual design. This concept design camp will walk you through the steps of design for books, products, movies, or games. Get ready to be highly imaginative with illustration instruction to practice design while creating based on your own unique ideas.

  • Art Camp: Mixed Media Art

    This popular camp is process oriented and designed to enhance your enjoyment of art and creative expression. Learn to use various materials and enhance your confidence in your creativity. Explore your creativity using mediums such as pen and ink, charcoal, soft and oil pastels, watercolors, acrylics, and more.

  • Bash 'Em Bots

    Design your custom Lego bot to take on any challenge. Mix and match chassis designs using wheels, treads, or walking legs. Combine these with tools like drills, hammers, and battering rams as you refine your masterpiece by sparring with friends and overcoming obstacles. Apply real-world engineering and physics concepts to help you bash and crash your way to victory!

  • Chess Camp with Annokov Chess Academy

    Chess Summer Camps are the perfect way to introduce the game of chess to those new to the game and to deepen chess understanding for established players. Join us for multiple weeks to improve your skills and participate in multiple game opportunities. Grandmaster instructors will provide daily lessons, puzzles, and play to help guide you through each session. Grandmasters will share their chess vision on (1) Tactics, (2) Strategy, (3) Middlegame Planning, and (4) Endgame Technique. Each camp provides opportunities to practice these skills with classmates in a variety of activities and workshops.

    Chess Camp is offered in partnership with Annakov Chess Academy.

  • Coding Games with Game Maker

    This game design program focuses on building a 2D game using Game Maker. For beginners, you can use block-based programming to customize your creations in game. More experienced participants can try out the integrated scripting language. Highlights include the use of a hands-on game design lab where participants design, customize, construct, and test their creations. No coding experience necessary, beginners should be familiar with computer use.

  • Cooking Around the World: Greece

    Our second stop in our Cooking Around the World tour this summer is Greece! If you missed our tour of France, please plan to join us for Greece and Italy. As we step into the beautiful country of Greece, we will take time to appreciate the Greek culture as we work together to create traditional Greek dishes.

  • Culinary Chemistry

    In this class you will become an experimental scientist in your very own kitchen laboratory! We will explore topics of food science including baking, emulsions, flavors, acids, and make some delicious treats along the way. Students will be given common homemade recipes with measurements in English units and asked to convert them into metric units using dimensional analysis. Students will be asked to identify the ingredients as solid, liquid or gas, to classify steps of their procedures as containing compounds or mixtures, as well as identify whether chemical or physical changes are taking place along the way. We will explore the chemistry of the main ingredients involved in baking and how you can manipulate them to make your own ideal baked good. By Friday, you will design your own experimental recipe and cook a baked good that you can share with the class!

  • Cupcake Wars

    Everyone loves cupcakes and now you can learn how to make some of the most impressive and yummy ones yourself! Your cupcakes will taste great and look amazing with creative designs, such as flowers, animals, and scenes. Work together with a team to enter daily challenges and competitions. Will your team's cupcake be the judge's winning choice?

  • Dog Days of Summer

    Come join us as we learn about animals and impact. We will design and build doghouses along with hand-made dog toys and deliver them to a local animal shelter! While there, we will have the opportunity to spend time with the animals in the shelters, which is always a highlight of anyone's day. Another highlight of the week will be a trip to the Dallas Zoo to learn more about animal conservation. Register with a friend to double the fun!

    Take a risk! These are the very words that entrepreneurs act upon. Do you have an idea that you feel can become something great? Come learn what it takes to be an entrepreneur and a design thinker! Work with your classmates to create solutions that will improve the world around you. Who knows - your first invention might have its beginnings in this very class!

  • eSports: Minecraft STEM Battles

    This Minecraft esports program is similar to LEGO First robotics, and other academic competition clubs, and offers a new way to challenge players. In this esports program, competitors will be tasked with analyzing and solving complex science & engineering problems and using Minecraft to demonstrate their solutions. Teams will compete against each other by building & coding academic solutions within Minecraft Education Edition. However, like a traditional game competition, teams must also play offense & defense, sending out scouts to interrupt their competitors.

    In the Rocket League esports program you will learn the moves, strategies, pro tips and tricks to compete against other kids in this hard-hitting game. Rocket League is a high-powered hybrid gaming experience that features arcade-style soccer action, where each team uses their skills and wit to try and beat their competitors.

  • Experience Dallas

    What better way to spend your summer days than visiting interesting and fun locations all around the great city of Dallas? We will take daily field trips and spend the final day creating a trip journal with pictures and thoughts portraying the journeys of the week. Field trips may include places such as the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Klyde Warren Park, a local sports arena, the Dallas Zoo, blueberry picking, and more! You will need to bring a backpack with sunscreen, a water bottle, two snacks, and a brown bag lunch. You may bring a camera to take pictures for your trip journal. Register with a friend to maximize the fun!

  • Extreme Minecraft: Codes & Commands

    Collaborate, code, and create projects to take Minecraft to the extreme.   • Indoor Rock Climbing

    This is the perfect indoor sports camp! Coach Stewart Ball has designed this experience to learn the basics of indoor rock climbing under the close supervision of a team of excellent climbing coaches. Climbing indoors at one of the best new climbing facilities in the country, Movement, we will focus on basic climbing skills and problem solving as well as building agility, balance, and coordination. Indoor Rock Climbing is a field trip camp, leaving from and returning to Hockaday daily. Space is limited, so don’t miss out!

  • Martial Arts Summer Camp

    Join Hockaday’s coaching staff for multiple weeks to develop lifelong skills that boost confidence, foster camaraderie, and increase athletic capabilities in all sports while making new friends! Our days will start with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, allowing you to learn how to use leverage against larger and stronger opponents. The second half of camp will consist of kickboxing, where you will use mitts and heavy bags to practice strikes.   • Minecraft Live: Introduction to Streaming Video

    Do you love playing Minecraft and watching YouTube and Twitch videos about Minecraft? Up your game and learn what it takes to be a Minecraft Youtuber or Twitch streamer! This digital video-focused program is designed for kids who have some prior experience playing Minecraft and who want to make and stream videos. During this program you will direct, edit, and produce videos which would be appropriate for display on various video streaming platforms. Participants will produce videos and learn to use Streamlabs OBS. By the end of the program, you will have created a series of Minecraft Let's Play videos, learn voice-over techniques, and have the option to share a live video with the other participants in the program.

  • Ninja Warrior Camp

    If you are looking for the most unique and fun camp experience, you've found it! Lead by Hockaday's Coach LaBoris Bean and the professional staff at Gauntlet Fitness, Ninja Warrior camp will increase campers' self-confidence, strength, balance, coordination, and agility, while they learn how to do the obstacles they see on the show American Ninja Warrior. This camp is designed to be fun, while also keeping campers active and strong over the summer. Safety and technique tutorials from the Gauntlet Fitness coaching staff, relays, obstacle courses, and of course plenty of free time to play on all the obstacles will round out the day in the gym. This is a field trip camp. Campers will travel by bus from Hockaday to Gauntlet Fitness and back to Hockaday.!

    Summer at Hockaday is thrilled to partner with Lisa Burdette and The Dallas School of Etiquette to provide this fun and engaging camp that will cover a wide range of topics and skills appropriate for a developing pre-teen and young teenager. Each day will tackle specific skill sets that will enhance your ability to feel confident in multiple situations, to present yourself according to the setting you will join, and to be challenged in personal growth and maturity. Lisa will cover topics, such as dining etiquette, introductions, showing respect, self-presentation, personal hygiene, the perfect thank-you note, etiquette when attending formal affairs, and more!

  • Roblox: Coding & Scripting

    Take your Roblox games to the next level by learning how to modify your games and obbys by writing customized code. Using Roblox Studio as your game engine, participants will create and customize game levels and obbys to learn how to edit and write LUA code scripts. If you are new to writing or editing code, LUA is a scripting language used in Roblox that involves the process of creating special commands that can modify how the Roblox game works. In this program you will learn about LUA, write scripts that modify Roblox and create your own code for your unique experiences. LUA is a very approachable programming language and isn't as complex as other coding languages, however we recommend that participants have some computer experience and be able to read and follow instructions.

    Using VEX® IQ, this camp offers the next level of hands-on learning in Robotics. VEX® IQ allows you to build complex robots with tons of motors (12 ports!), advanced gears and pulley systems, high-tech sensors, and enhanced controllability. VEX® IQ robots also make use of both a vertical programming language similar to Scratch, and ROBOTC, the standard for educational robotics and competitions. This gives you the experience using the same programs used by middle school, high school, and even college robotics teams nationwide!   • Science of Minecraft: Chemistry and Physics

    Do you have a curiosity about science, chemistry, and physics? This program was created to teach participants about these exciting STEM topics using Minecraft as the laboratory to design, craft, and test experiments through virtual simulations. In our physics lessons, participants will learn about the science of kinetic and potential energy, speed, acceleration, and gravity. Our chemistry lessons will teach participants about atoms, molecules, and elements. The chemistry labs will explore the periodic table and create tests to see how the chemicals react - participants will create compounds using molecules and focus on "reactions" by creating things like sparklers, glowsticks, and floating balloons. In this program participants work toward building the ultimate scientific laboratory in our virtual campground to build and test scientific concepts through science-themed builds. No prior experience is necessary! All skill levels are welcome.

    Ready, set, soar! The key to excelling in all sports is speed and/or endurance and proper form. With the coach's guidance, you will set personal goals and strive each day to reach them along with participating in cross training, fun runs, and relays with other campers. In this particular week, centered around Equation Solving and Pre-Algebra Concepts, students will work on concepts such as whole number operations, solving one-step equations, solving two-step equations, solving equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign, solving equations involving fractions and decimals, combining like terms, equation review, solving equations involving combining like terms, perimeter and area problems involving algebraic expressions, and pre-algebra problems involving fractions and decimals.     The three-week Summer Writing Institute will include a thematic approach to writing, drawing from a variety of literary fiction and non-fiction sources. Short works will be analyzed to identify theme, structure, punctuation, diction, and figurative language. Students will respond to pieces through prose and/or poetry, creating original writings for peer review. The depth and focus of courses taught will vary according to grade level to achieve grade-appropriate instruction and challenge.   • Web Development and Graphic Design

    This game design program focuses on building a 2D game using Game Maker. For beginners, you can use block-based programming to customize your creations in game. More experienced participants can try out the integrated scripting language. Highlights include the use of a hands-on game design lab where participants design, customize, construct, and test their creations. No coding experience necessary, beginners should be familiar with computer use.

  • World Peace Game

    Back by popular demand! The World Peace Game is a hands-on political simulation. Four countries are pitted against each other as students take on the roles of prime ministers, UN officials, World Bank members, and more. The object is to achieve world peace and global prosperity by challenging students with 50 interlocking crises such as hurricanes, oil spills, refugee asylum, and food shortages while under the threat of war.

    At YouTube® Camp – Content Creators, learn the exciting process of creating a successful vlog/video for YouTube®! Identify an audience, create a brand, brainstorm a creative format, produce engaging content, and create at least one YouTube®-style video. Utilizing the hands-on format of this course, you’ll learn the skills you need to create your own vlog/video for YouTube®.   • Martial Arts Camp

    Join Hockaday’s coaching staff for multiple weeks to develop lifelong skills that boost confidence, foster camaraderie, and increase athletic capabilities in all sports while making new friends! Our days will start with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, allowing you to learn how to use leverage against larger and stronger opponents. The second half of camp will consist of kickboxing, where you will use mitts and heavy bags to practice strikes. All participants who attend for the full summer will earn the first stripe on their jiu-jitsu belt!

  • Ninja Warrior Camp

    If you are looking for the most unique and fun camp experience, you've found it! Lead by Hockaday's Coach LaBoris Bean and the professional staff at Gauntlet Fitness, Ninja Warrior camp will increase campers' self-confidence, strength, balance, coordination, and agility, while they learn how to do the obstacles they see on the show American Ninja Warrior. This camp is designed to be fun, while also keeping campers active and strong over the summer. Safety and technique tutorials from the Gauntlet Fitness coaching staff, relays, obstacle courses, and of course plenty of free time to play on all the obstacles will round out the day in the gym. This is a field trip camp. Campers will travel by bus from Hockaday to Gauntlet Fitness and back to Hockaday.!

  • Volleyball Camp

    Coached by Andy Gass, Head Varsity Coach at The Hockaday School, Allison Camp, Varsity Volleyball Assistant Coach at The Hockaday School, and Christy Alvillar, Junior Varisty Volleyball Coach at The Hockaday School.

    Volleyball Camp is designed for the 4th-12th grade athlete as an introduction to the sport of volleyball. Players will build on individual skills such as serving, passing, setting, and hitting. Players will also strengthen basic offensive and defensive concepts.
