Summer at Hockaday 2017

Upper School (Grades 9-12)

Summer at Hockaday offers a variety of camps and classes for girls and boys entering Grades 5 - 10. In the hopes of working within family summer schedules, we have created one-week and two-week options. Combine programs and create an awesome summer full of academics, sports, and enrichment totaling up to 7 weeks! The Summer Math & Writing Institute will offer students in grades 5 - 10 in-depth instruction in the areas of math and writing, along with opportunities for experiential learning through various elective programs. Students will be assessed on the first day of the institute and placed in the appropriate instructional level. Students who attend a full day will receive individualized instruction in math and writing along with an elective program.

  • Minecraft U

    This is the Minecraft camp for you! Minecraft U follows a progressive curriculum focused on learning computer skills, problem solving, planning and building, but it's Minecraft, so it's always going to be fun! We emphasize cooperative play and teach game etiquette. Included in the camp tuition is one year of access to our Minecraft monitored server, which allows campers continued access to their projects. Our staff is comprised of computer scientists, teachers, and software developers who also enjoy gaming and Minecraft.

  • Model Citizen: Fashion Camp

    In this camp, you will model, style, and produce your own fashion show! You'll learn the basics for runway modeling and practice fun exercises designed to increase self-esteem and expand self-confidence. These include age-appropriate hair and make-up, basic turns, poise, fashion styling and coordination, health and fitness, social awareness, etiquette, personal growth, fashion show fitting, and a runway rehearsal. Open to both boys and girls, graduation includes a fashion show presentation for family, friends, and other campers.

  • NEW! Self-Defense for High School Girls

    The risk of being sexually assaulted is high for young women between the ages of 14 and 25. It is estimated that 1 in 4 women will experience sexual assault during high school or college. The risk is not only from strangers but also from those known to the young women and often occur during social situations. This course provides students a set of tools to deal with the most common forms of sexual assault. Students will learn why and how sexual assaults occur, how to reduce their risk, research proven tactics and strategies, and physical skills in the event they need to physically fight to escape. Alcohol fueled sexual assault is also covered in depth as this is a common form of assault in this age group. The class ends with simulated attacks where the students will have the opportunity to practice their skills with specially trained males in padded suits. Students will leave this class more aware, more confident and more informed. Instructor: Meg Hinkley of Athena’s Strategies teaches the self -defense course for all Hockaday seniors. Her program is taught in high schools and universities throughout the U.S.

Two-Week Classes

The Summer Math & Writing Institute will offer students in Grades 5-10 in-depth instruction in the areas of math and writing, along with opportunities for experiential learning through various elective programs. Students will be assessed on the first day of the institute and placed in the appropriate instructional level. Students who attend a full day will receive individualized instruction in math and writing along with an elective program. Full-day registration is encouraged. However, participation in individual offerings is allowed. Upon registration, you will have the opportunity to select an elective class. Some electives will result in additional fees, which are listed in the class descriptions. Lunch is included in the tuition for the full-day program.

  • Math Institute: Algebra and Beyond Series

    This course is designed for students who have successfully completed a pre-algebra course and will be enrolled in an Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II course in the fall. This course is also appropriate for students entering Hockaday's Integrated Math II and Integrated Math III courses. Students must be proficient and fluent with negative numbers to be successful in this course. Course topics may include variables and expressions, simplifying polynomials, equation solving, graphing linear equations, factoring, solving quadratic equations, simplifying radicals, word problems, and more. Students will be assessed on the first day of class to determine the best level of challenge needed. This is a great way to get ahead in Algebra I or to review Algebra I topics before taking more rigorous math courses. Enroll in multiple two-week sessions to strengthen skills and understanding of these abstract algebraic topics. Students are encouraged to register for multiple sessions as instruction will be progressive in nature. Your number sense will improve after spending up to six weeks in our Summer Math Institute!

  • Writing Institute

    Writing modules will include a thematic approach to writing, drawing from a variety of sources, such as myths, poems, legends, and more. Short works will be analyzed to identify theme, structure, punctuation, diction, and figurative language. Going beyond analysis into creation, students will brainstorm and create original works. A variety of writing techniques will be utilized as students create scripts, news articles, book reviews, and more. Students will respond to pieces through prose and/or poetry and create an original piece for peer review. Through the use of art, poetry, literature, current events and more, students will review and strengthen writing processes and skills. While the themes for each grade level might be the same, the depth to which the course is taught will vary according to grade level to achieve grade-appropriate instruction and challenge. Students are encouraged to register for multiple sessions as instruction will be progressive in nature.   • App Design Camp

    In this camp from Youth Digital, you learn foundational mobile app development skills as they design and program their own mobile game. During camp, you will complete a mobile game from start to finish, including choosing characters, level design, and programming the app's functionality! You will learn the same App Design concepts the pros use, including if-then statements, variables, debugging and troubleshooting to make your own mobile app! You will learn industry standard skills including level design to make it look great, the importance of user experience to make sure the game is playable, and gameplay mechanics to make your own game exciting and challenging. AT the conclusion of camp, you will be able to download and play your finished app on your Android or iOS device! You'll also have access to the online version of the course at the conclusion of camp, which includes video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and new challenges to keep your new skills sharp!

  • NEW! Father-Daughter Self-Defense

    This is a wonderful opportunity for fathers and daughters to bond over learning self-defense skills. Young women have a 1 in 4 chance of being sexually assaulted during high school and college. Fathers want to protect their daughters and keep them safe. This course provides an opportunity for both to learn the risks young women face in today’s world and how the latest research in women’s safety can protect them.   • NEW! Simulation Days: A Day in the Life led by Laura Day

    We will spend a full day immersed in navigating Dallas and serving Dallas’s most marginalized populations. We will visit social service agencies, go on scavenger hunts downtown, work in and tour local shelters. We will tackle social change topics such as animals, public education, access to the Trinity River, and homelessness. Learn about these issues, come up with proposals for solutions, and test your proposals. This meaningful experience will be led by Laura Day, Hockaday's Director of Service Learning. Participating students will also earn community service hours.

  • NEW! Video Game Design

    In this camp from Youth Digital, you will create a video game just like the pros do in real Game Design studios. You will use Unity®, an industry-standard Game Design software, and C#, a professional programming language, to build and code your game from scratch. As you code new features in your game, you will learn the most important concepts in programming, including if-then and conditional statements, logical operators, variables, methods, parameters, object types, and loops. You will also learn the fundamental techniques of Game Design, such as navigating and operating within a three-dimensional environment, utilizing prefabs generating custom particles, simulating artificial intelligence, and more. At the conclusion of camp, you will have a complete, fully functional game that you can play and share with friends. You will also be able to access the online version of the course upon the conclusion of camp, which includes video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and new challenges.

  • Summer Serve

    We will spend thematic days exploring social problems in Dallas. We will visit homeless shelters, animal shelters, environmental groups, community centers, and many more non-profits throughout Dallas.  You will be eligible for 30 hours of community service for the work you do in this camp. Come explore, be challenged, and give back in our community!

  • Art Studio

    There are unlimited possibilities for your imagination in Art Studio! Various art mediums will be used, such as painting, chalk, pencil, clay, and more as you create your masterpieces. Learn how art is connected to science, math, and technology and how art has earned its place in the world of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics). You might think you are not very good at art, but we will show you that everyone has a creative side - come join us!

    In the past, animation was often too daunting as specialized expensive equipment was needed, but using simple apps, creating animation is fun and simple! Come join us in this exciting stop-motion workshop. You will create your own clay characters and write and record your own original animations!

  • Counselor-In-Training

    Program requirement: When registering for the full-day CIT program, select one session in the registration process, and then volunteer for an additional two weeks following the session's end, for a total commitment of four weeks.

    The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program, is taught by experienced teachers who have a breadth of knowledge in the realms of volunteerism, child development, and classroom management. As a CIT, you will have the opportunity to learn what it takes to be a counselor through hands-on experience and practice. You will spend a portion of the session with other CITs learning the skills necessary to allow you to serve as a volunteer, which you will then experience first-hand in segments of our Summer at Hockaday camps and classes. Through this program, you are certain to enhance citizenship and leadership skills. Delve into volunteerism, all while having fun, enhancing teamwork, and gaining real-world experience! After completing the two-week training session, you will spend two weeks volunteering within Summer at Hockaday camps and classes. You will quickly develop your own fan club as our campers and students adore our CITs!

  • Girls Rock on Guitar

    This is a brand new stellar camp for girls who want to learn how to rock with the guitar! From beginner to lead guitarist, we have an amazing instructional camp which will be taught by some of Texas's leading professional rock musicians. Acoustic or electric, you can learn to make your guitar rock, jam with your friends, or even start a band. Please indicate beginner or intermediate in the registration. Beginner: no previous training; Intermediate: one year or more of training.

  • Indoor Rock Climbing

    You are going to love this program! Climbing is a sport that builds strength throughout your entire body. Climbing demands agility, balance, coordination, and problem-solving skills, which is why it is one of the fastest growing rec sports. An American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) certified Climbing Wall Instructor will lead the course, which adheres to AMGA standards for curriculum and instruction. Climbing equipment and transportation to Summit Gym is provided. Wear summer workout clothes.

  • Intramural Multi Sports

    Join Coach La'Boris Bean and his staff in this fun week of a variety of sports. Campers will form teams and challenge each other in games such as field hockey, dodgeball, softball, indoor soccer, volleyball, basketball, fencing and more! This is just plain fun and great fitness at the same time!

  • Keyboarding

    Maybe you are a wiz at texting using only your thumbs, but you find yourself wishing to be quicker on the keyboard. If so, this class will help you increase your speed by improving your typing skills. You will definitely see improvement in the areas of speed and accuracy. Daily practice, games, and hands-on activities will enhance your learning of the keyboard.

  • Math Institute: Algebra and Beyond Series

    This course is designed for students who have successfully completed a pre-algebra course and will be enrolled in an Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II course in the fall. This course is also appropriate for students entering Hockaday's Integrated Math II and Integrated Math III courses. Students must be proficient and fluent with negative numbers to be successful in this course. Course topics may include variables and expressions, simplifying polynomials, equation solving, graphing linear equations, factoring, solving quadratic equations, simplifying radicals, word problems, and more. Students will be assessed on the first day of class to determine the best level of challenge needed. This is a great way to get ahead in Algebra I or to review Algebra I topics before taking more rigorous math courses. Enroll in multiple two-week sessions to strengthen skills and understanding of these abstract algebraic topics. Students are encouraged to register for multiple sessions as instruction will be progressive in nature. Your number sense will improve after spending up to six weeks in our Summer Math Institute!

  • Minecraft U

    This is an ideal Minecraft camp for kids who want to expand their knowledge of computer science and coding, without taking the fun and challenge out of Minecraft! We will use the Minecraft mod ComputerCraft to learn the basics of programming and then apply our skills to in-game robots designed by you! More ambitious students will learn the basics of Java, the most common programming language in the world, to create a modification of Minecraft. Included in the camp fee is one year access to our whitelisted, monitored server, so you can continue to hone your skills and work on projects.

    Two-Week Classes

    The Summer Math & Writing Institute will offer students in Grades 5-10 in-depth instruction in the areas of math and writing, along with opportunities for experiential learning through various elective programs. Students will be assessed on the first day of the institute and placed in the appropriate instructional level. Students who attend a full day will receive individualized instruction in math and writing along with an elective program. Full-day registration is encouraged. However, participation in individual offerings is allowed. Upon registration, you will have the opportunity to select an elective class. Some electives will result in additional fees, which are listed in the class descriptions. Lunch is included in the tuition for the full-day program.

  • Tennis & Swim

    In this camp, we will combine two of our popular summer programs. Tennis will take place during the first hour, followed by indoor swim during the second hour.

    In tennis, you will be challenged whether you are an advanced-beginning or an advanced-intermediate player. We will work on cardiovascular and agility drills and engage in full-court matches. We will stress a full service motion, overhead, and volley skills. You will also learn strategy of singles and doubles play. After assessing your playing level, you will practice with and challenge others of comparable skill. The ball machine will be available and in case of rain, indoor activities that can be applied to tennis will take place. Grab your racquet and get ready for some tennis fun!

    In swimming, front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke are the strokes you will learn and strengthen in these two weeks. We will throw in water games for some friendly competition. You must be comfortable and independent in the water to participate in this camp.

  • Writing Institute

    Writing modules will include a thematic approach to writing, drawing from a variety of sources, such as myths, poems, legends, and more. Short works will be analyzed to identify theme, structure, punctuation, diction, and figurative language. Going beyond analysis into creation, students will brainstorm and create original works. A variety of writing techniques will be utilized as students create scripts, news articles, book reviews, and more. Students will respond to pieces through prose and/or poetry and create an original piece for peer review. Through the use of art, poetry, literature, current events and more, students will review and strengthen writing processes and skills. While the themes for each grade level might be the same, the depth to which the course is taught will vary according to grade level to achieve grade-appropriate instruction and challenge. Students are encouraged to register for multiple sessions as instruction will be progressive in nature.
