Hockaday and the Dallas Rowing Club are partnering this summer to offer two-week, learn-to-row camps for 7th and 8th grade students at Bachman Lake. The camp will teach sculling (rowing with two oars as opposed to simple sweeping with one oar).  Campers will spend most of the first week in single sculls (one-person boats) and will move into doubles (two-person) and quads (four-person) boats in the second week.

Coached by Hockaday’s Head Rowing Coach and other Bachman Lake coaches, participants will receive an orientation to the Dallas Rowing Club boathouse, out of which three scholastic programs—ESD, Hockaday, and St. Mark’s—currently row as well as basic fundamentals such as boat handling, maneuvering, and staying in a traffic pattern.

Participants must be able to swim one complete lap of the pool using any stroke and must be able to tread water for 5 minutes.  The swim test and self-rescue exercise from a capsized boat will occur on the first day of each session in a pool. The rest of the camp will take place at Bachman Lake (weather dependent) with transportation to and from Hockaday provided.  Each session will have two coaches and a counselor and is limited to 10 participants. Please contact Will Forteith, Hockaday’s Head Rowing Coach, with questions.

A parent or guardian will be required to sign the online Dallas Rowing Club waiver for each camper, which can be accessed at http://www.dallasrowingclub.org/forms.

  • New! Brainstorming with Minecraft

Where do tech companies like Apple, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft get their new products and ideas? From people who know how to think creatively about technology. That's what Brainstorming with Minecraft is all about-- how to create ideas and put them to work with technology. We will use Minecraft as our brainstorming playground because it is friendly and easy to use, but still sophisticated enough to use with Java code. Over the course of the camp, students will learn about worldbuilding, product design and work management. Students will practice a design sprint, prototyping, user testing, iteration, and Kanban-- all tools and methods that real software teams use to create the products you use every day. The first two days will serve as a mini design sprint. (Design sprints were developed by Google Ventures as a way to quickly create product prototypes in order to validate ideas.) Campers will brainstorm, collaborate, and design a modpack and adventure map. The days following will be spent in the build phase as campers learn about iteration and user testing. Campers will manage their work on a Kanban board while strategizing their messaging and marketing collateral. Final days will be spent packaging the modpack/map and publishing it for the world to see.

  • New! Girls Soar!

Offered by Shanterra McBride, Founder, Marvelous University
Ok, girls. Let's face it. These years can be some of the best years of your life, even when you feel like these are the worst times ever. Most of the time, the worst is based on all the changes that are happening that are mostly not in our control. It's also because relationships change, friendships change and you change. This is also the time when we share less with our parents, not because we don't want to share, it's just that they don't seem to understand things anymore. Things like (1) friendship, (2) confidence, (3) body image, (4) self-esteem, (5) peer influence, (6) future, and (7) something simple like mastering the Selfie! This camp provides a safe and supportive environment where girls learn new skills to help them navigate challenging situations. We spend each day growing, learning something new about ourselves, learning a skill, and using problem-solving skills to navigate various scenarios. Each session closes with a mantra and slight "homework" to retain information.
