Will Forteith

Rowing
Varsity Head Coach

With more than 20 years of teaching and coaching experience in independent schools, Will Forteith joined the School in 2018-19 as Hockaday’s Head Rowing Coach and a Middle School faculty member.   At Hockaday, Will has taught 8th grade Speech & Debate, handled Special Projects for both Middle School and Upper School, and served as Coordinator of Athletic Operations.  He currently teaches 6th and 7th grade English and serves as the Head Rowing Coach.
 
Will earned a Master of Education in Private School Leadership from Columbia University, Teachers College, Klingenstein Center in New York, New York; a Master of Arts in English from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont; a Bachelor of Arts in English and History, magna cum laude, from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he also rowed on the Men’s Varsity Lightweight team.

Most recently at Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey, Will was the Director of Rowing Programs, History Teacher, Co-Housemaster, and Head Men’s Rowing Coach.  Prior to Blair Academy, Will was the Middle School Principal and English and history teacher at The Walker School in Marietta, Georgia for three years where he managed operations, participated in the admission process, regularly communicated with parents, updated curriculum, and strengthened cross-divisional collaboration. Before joining The Walker School, he taught at the St. Mark’s School of Texas for nine years, where he was the Assistant Head of Middle School, Humanities Department Chair and teacher, and Head Varsity Rowing Coach.  Will also taught Middle School English at the Parish Episcopal School in Dallas and was an Upper School English teacher and Assistant Crew Coach at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut.

In addition to serving as an educator and administrator for independent schools, Will’s background in rowing is extensive. With almost 30 years in the sport, including more than 20 years as a coach, his teams have earned numerous medals and championships at the state, regional, and national level.
