As over the past several years, we offer a joint effort between Hockaday and St. Mark’s that provides our Middle School students opportunities to engage in shared, intellectual activities each year of Middle School. In the past, the interaction between our students has been limited to more social situations provided by our wonderful parent volunteers, and/or school-sponsored community service for our seventh and eighth graders, and dances in eighth grade. Dean Clayman, Head of Middle School at St. Mark’s, Gabriela Reed, St. Mark’s Middle School Counselor, Rachel Innerarity, our Middle School Counselor, Laura Day, Hockaday Director of the Institute for Social Impact, and I have designed programming that allows students from both schools to interact while serving the community, educating themselves, and conversing in meaningful ways. We are addressing the overarching goal of teaching our students about productive, developmentally-appropriate, critical-thinking interactions in mixed groups. Our sixth graders will enjoy team-building activities tomorrow afternoon, Friday, March 6 from 4:30-6:00 pm at Hockaday with their peers from St. Mark’s. Our students may stay in Daisy Den until the start of the activities or may go home and come back at 4:30. Hockaday students must wear their uniforms to this event. Hockaday and St. Mark’s administrators and faculty will chaperone; parents should drop off your girls at 4:30. Fifth-grade parents will receive more details as the fifth-grade event draws nearer; it is scheduled for Friday, April 17 at Hockaday. Specific information regarding seventh and eighth grade activities are also included in this Daisynews. I am deeply grateful to our friends at St. Mark’s, Ms. Day, and Mrs. Innerarity for their partnership and efforts as we develop our programming. In addition, I appreciate the support of the heads of both schools as we continue to move forward in this endeavor. I am thrilled at the possibilities and skills this program affords both the girls and the boys as they move through Middle and Upper Schools and then into life beyond! |
