Putting Social Mission First

Students in Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Economics and Social Entrepreneurship, a Social Impact-designated class, visited Howdy Homemade Ice Cream recently to hear from founder Tom Landis.
Tom started the business when he became keenly aware of how quickly those with special needs were overlooked as productive employees after hiring a young man with Down syndrome at a restaurant. Students learned how Tom created a space where teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities could find meaningful employment, and how a money-making enterprise can stand as an example of how companies can put a social mission first.
Students in Breaking the Glass Ceiling learn economic principles and the incubation of a business and engage in real-world learning from co-teachers who are Hockaday alumnae and industry leaders. They develop and pitch a culminating socially conscious business plan that addresses a current world issue and compete for funding.
