Middle School History Curriculum Highlights

Fifth grade World Geography just wrapped up a unit on Australia, Oceania, and Antarctica. Fifth graders focused on test skills, note-taking, and writing using the RACER format during this unit. Students will continue to focus on writing in the next unit of study, Russia and Its Neighbors. Students continue to engage in the World Peace Game, and A Newscast on Europe will close out the year.

Sixth grade history is currently discussing the Civil War. In addition to learning the historical facts, students are being exposed to what soldier life was like by participating in marching exercises and playing Civil War baseball. They will also sing some popular songs at the time, examine photographs taken during the war, and act out scenes from a normal day in the life of a soldier. By experiencing the history, hopefully the students will gain a greater understanding of the crucial impact this war has had on American history.

Seventh and eighth grade history classes are abuzz with activity as students delve into their Spring research papers. It’s not just about gathering information but also learning essential research skills, such as sourcing credible information, critical reading, and synthesizing their findings. Each student is putting their critical thinking and analysis skills to the test as they work to develop a comprehensive understanding of their topics. With stacks of books, notes, and online resources at their fingertips, students are honing their research skills and preparing themselves for future academic endeavors.
