Hockaday's Hive

Hockaday welcomed our first beehive onto campus this morning!
Located near the Field Research Station behind the softball field, the beehive features Italian honey bees, who are mild tempered and perfect for urban environments. Our Science department will incorporate beehive activity into their curricula throughout the year, and be on the lookout for some special Hockaday honey in the bookstore!

There are also some bee hotels located around campus. Bee hotels are for native bees to lay their eggs. Native bees are really gentle and are mostly nonsocial, so they feel no need to protect the bee hotel. They come and go as they gather resources to feed their growing larvae!

We can’t wait to share more bee updates throughout the year. To follow the bees, click here. You can subscribe to see pollination information, hive activity, fun facts, and more!
