Faculty Innovation Spotlight

At Hockaday, innovation and collaboration are at the heart of how we inspire girls to think critically, solve problems creatively, and lead with confidence.
Each month, we spotlight a faculty member who brings these ideals to life in our classrooms. This month, we’re featuring Upper School history teacher and Writing Center Director Scott Bowman, who has continually focused on what is best for students and remains committed to his own growth as an educator.

Building upon the strong legacy of the Writing Center, he continues to envision new possibilities for its future. Recently, he established a partnership with Stanford’s d.school to explore innovative ways the Writing Center can further serve and inspire all students on campus. In the classroom, Scott incorporates alternative assessments, fosters critical thinking and synthesis, and engages his students through creative learning experiences—most recently, a scavenger hunt designed as an in-class assignment.

“Scott understands that learning begins with mindset and being present,” said Lisa Culbertson ’96, Head of Upper School. “His trademark–starting class with a mindfulness exercise–helps students enter the zone where deep learning happens. He models curiosity, deep thinking, and high expectations in the way he asks questions in a classroom all the way to creating courses that are engaging, thoughtful, and timely.”
