Game Highlights

I do not believe that any team has ever been more excited about a loss than the Hockaday group was on Saturday. They knew going into the game that a victory by St. John's would put Hockaday, Kinkaid, and St. John's into a three-way tie for first. Our records against each other were 1-1 so we would still be tied. The next step would be going to point differential among the tied teams. After some serious calculations, Hockaday figured out they could lose but not by more than three points. As the game unfolded, St. John's was in control. They were playing tough defense, controlling the boards, and hitting their outside shots. Point guard Katherine Lagow was ill but still managed to stay on the court. Sophomore Raven Tatum went down with a knee injury but managed to come back in the game. With about three minutes remaining in the game, Hockaday was down by 11 and did not look like they were going to challenge. They slowly started chipping away at the lead. They began to foul to stop the clock and St. John's was not making their free throws. With less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, Hockaday was down by four points, with freshman Taylor Thornton on the line. She calmly sank the first free throw and St. John's called a time out to ice the shooter. Taylor stepped up and made the second free throw to cut the deficit to two points. The Mavericks brought the ball down the floor and attempted a long shot that fell short. Hockaday rebounded the ball to lose the game.....but only by two points! The crowd went wild. That comeback earned Hockaday the number one seed in the South Zone. Sarah Jonson was the leading scorer for Hockaday with 17 points. She was six for six from the free throw line. Raven Tatum had 10 points, Katherine Lagow had 11 points, seven assists, and five rebounds, and Taylor Thornton went four for four from the free throw line for the game. Their first round game will be on Friday, February 10 at noon when we take on Oakridge. All of their games will be played at The Kinkaid School. Best of luck!
