Lower School Teachers Receive 2015 Prentiss Grants

In 1999 Michael and Patricia Prentiss established a professional development endowment fund that was given in the names of their two daughters, Paige '92 and Kennedy '99. This generous gift that has become a part of Hockaday's Endowment Fund offers teachers the opportunity to enjoy summer travel experience and education. The Prentiss Grant is rotated amongst the three divisions. This year four Lower School teachers have been awarded the 20 15 Prentiss Grant:

Julie Harrison, one of our teachers in the second grade, will be travelling to Greece and Turkey. In second grade, Julie serves as the social studies chair and teaches her girls about Greek culture. Julie is excited to bring back stories, photographs, and artifacts to share with her students in years to come.

Kelly Turner will be joining Julie in Greece and Turkey. Kelly also teaches in the second grade and is looking forward to the opportunity to see so many cities in a short time frame. Kelly is looking forward to starting the trip in Athens, Greece where she will tour the city and see the Acropolis. Then, by journeying on a cruise ship, Kelly will get to visit Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos, Kusadasi, and Istanbul. She is so excited to "gain a new perspective on teaching and life" through this trip.

Karen Roberts is also looking forward to her trip this summer. She will participate in an outdoor educational research experience in July. This volunteer opportunity, offered through the Little Cayman Research Centre, will allow her to "meet and work with others from around the world, explore ocean reefs, and learn from and alongside researchers."

The final recipient, Martha Zavaleta, will be attending the Chautauqua Institution, a nonprofit adult education center which offers multidisciplinary learning programs. She will be attending the Redefining Europe Session which will allow her to "examine what it means to be a citizen of Europe today." She will also engage in devotional services and lectures on social, political, and academic issues, and she will see performances at the Institute's Amphitheater each night. Martha is looking forward to being in such an extraordinary learning environment.
