Hockaday Crew Celebrates Successful Season at Texas Rowing Championships

The Hockaday Crew Team participated in the 2015 Texas Rowing Championships April 18-19, 2015. Hockaday Crew is one of only three school teams represented and the girls performed exceptionally well. Our second Varsity Squad won the State Championship with members Teal Cohen, Manisha Ratakonda, Elizabeth Michel, and Emma Winson. This gold medal is proof of all their dedication and hard work. The doubles team of Teal Cohen and Manisha Ratakonda won a silver medal as well. Hockaday also qualified for the finals in every event, but the first Varsity Double.

Everyone on the team had an outstanding performance. The Hockaday Novice group made their first finals appearance and landed 6th place overall, which is another amazing accomplishment. “Rowing for a school team, in my book, is AWESOME because we have created friendships with people whom we would not be friends with otherwise,” said Crew member Teal Cohen. “Being on your school team creates a sense of school spirit that athletes who don’t row for Hockaday certainly do not experience.”

“Finishing 1st in the state in an event was an incredible feeling,” Teal continued. “And it is something that Hockaday has not accomplished in past 10 years. Finally, we had a chance to show how hard we have worked this past year and proved to everyone in the state that Hockaday Crew is good enough because we believe in each other, our team and in our school!”

Manisha Ratakonda explained, “Rowing for Hockaday has been one of the hardest but most enjoyable experiences in Upper School. Since we row against other club teams, we are forced to work even harder in order to be as successful as them, but it in the end it is all worth it because we are able to win medals while having fun and representing our school.”

“Winning our event at states was amazing because we were finally able to see that all of the mornings in the weight room and all of our Saturdays out on the water were worth it. Not only as a boat, but as a team. We have been working hard and pushing ourselves and each other, and to have it all pay off meant a lot to the team as a whole.”

Additional highlights from the 2015 season include:
State Champions (2nd Varsity/”JV” Quad – Elizabeth Michel, Manisha Ratakonda, Teal Cohen, Emma Winson). A Perfect, Dominant Performance – Undefeated against Texas Crews.
2nd Place (2nd Varsity Double – Manisha Ratakonda, Teal Cohen). Gutsy performance in a very tough field.
4th Place (Varsity Lwt. Double – Elizabeth Michel, Emma Winson) Missed 2nd place by .6 second – Photo finish with three boats vying for two medal positions. So Close…
5th Place (1st Novice Quad – Cheryl Hao, Lauren Hoang, Maggie Stein, Wendy Ho) This crew’s first Final of the year. Impressive Row.
6th Place (1st Novice Double – Cheryl Hao, Wendy Ho) This crew’s first Final of the Year in probably the most competitive event of the regatta.
Other crews composed of Amy Jia, Joy Nesbitt, and Luda Grigoryeva put in tremendous efforts against the odds and placed very well in their heats.

Coach Tim McAlliseter said, “For Luda, this was her last competition for Hockaday Crew and we will miss here next year. For Amy and Joy, their power, poise, and technique, as sophomores, bodes very well indeed for the future successes of Hockaday Crew.”

Congratulations to all Crew members on a fantastic season.
