Hockaday Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

The Hockaday School proudly recognizes the students advancing as semifinalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program, a national academic competition for recognition and scholarship that began in 1955.

The semifinalists include Mahima Agrawal, Rajya Atluri, Frances Burton, Cristina Chavez, Lori Jia, Suzette Kane, Alexandra McGeoch, Caroline McGeoch, Whitney Middlekauff, Heather Xiao, and Vivian Zhou. These girls were chosen from more than 1.5 million juniors in nearly 22,000 high schools by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Nationwide, more than 16,000 semifinalists have been named this year and now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarship awards, worth approximately $32 million.

“As one of our four cornerstones, Scholarship is deeply instilled in each Hockaday girl, and I am so proud of Hockaday’s National Merit Semifinalists for their diligence and steadfast commitment to academic excellence,” said Eugene McDermott Headmistress Liza Lee.

Note to Editors: Using numbers of Semifinalists to compare high schools, educational systems, or states will result in erroneous conclusions. The National Merit® Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The program does not measure the quality or effectiveness of education within a school, system, or state.
