Hockaday Math Club Competes at the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament

Hockaday Math Club brought a team of eight girls to participate in the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday, February 20.
HMMT is one of the hardest and most rigorous international mathematics competitions, and the girls had to do a full day of math tests: three challenging fifty-minute individual tests, one one-hour proof based team test, and one eighty-minute guts round competition. In order to attend this competition, Hockaday had to apply, and was accepted by the HMMT committee.

There were 91 teams that participated from all over the world, and Hockaday was the only all-girls mathematics team. This competition is very difficult, so many teams recruit from various schools. For example, the team that won 5th place for sweepstakes was composed of students from various schools in Florida. This is Hockaday's second year competing in this competition, and the girls enjoyed the thought-provoking problems.

The following eight girls represented the Hockaday Math Team at HMMT:
Effie Guo (Class of 2018), Elizabeth Guo (Class of 2018), Wendy Ho (Class of 2017), Lin Lin Lee (Class of 2018), Lydia Li (Class of 2016), Jasmine Jin (Class of 2016), Elizabeth Zhou (Class of 2017), and Vivian Zhou (Class of 2016).

For sweepstakes, Hockaday got 69th overall, beating 21 teams. For individual scoring, Lydia Li and Lin Lin Lee placed in the top half of all the individuals (over 700 individuals competed).
