A Message from Randal Rhodus

Dear Lower School Parents,

As I look at the Upcoming Dates sections, I’m struck by the fact that we really ARE getting close to the end of this school year (only 20 days left)! For me, the time has positively flown by. Your daughters have worked, played, and learned with perseverance and joy, and they’ve clearly grown taller, too! Read more

Yesterday, we held our annual Hockadaisy and poetry gathering in Hoffman Commons. All year, Ms. Dickmann and Mrs. Branson work tirelessly with teachers to collect student poetry and art, and design and format our Lower School publication The Hockadaisy. During the assembly, this much anticipated book and its dedication were revealed. Hopefully, you all have seen this beautiful book with cover art designed by 4th grader Hayden Marchant. This year’s Hockadaisy was dedicated to three Lower School teachers, Brenda Bennett, Cathy Hall, and Victoria Johnson.

In addition to the big Hockadaisy reveal, winners of the Patrizi Award and The Poetry Society of Texas contest were also announced. The Patrizi Award is given every year to a Lower School student who has found joy and beauty in the reading and writing of poetry. This award is given in honor of former Hockaday student Catherine Patrizi. During the gathering, students learned more about this award and Catherine’s poetry through a slideshow of artwork created by Lower School art teacher Shelley Hampe. I would like to congratulate all of our Lower School winners below.

The Patrizi Award: Harper Tagg

2016 Poetry Society of Texas Student Awards: Sylvia Buckner, Annabel Callahan, Mae Flanagan, Evie Fox, Ashley Francis, Leya Glazer, Stella Grabham, Anika Kapoor, Zoë Lelevich, Hayden Marchant, Madison McClellan, Lily McKenna, Wynnie Roach, Katherine Shoup, Harper Tagg, Elena Zeballos

As we round the corner and head straight toward the close of the year, I was reminded this week of the virtue of peacefulness. What could be better, at such a busy time, than “being calm and quiet from the inside out”? Helping children to develop the ability to find inner serenity when they need it is a tremendous gift that we can give them.

Enjoy these last weeks of school!

Sincerely,

Randal Rhodus
