A Message from Alejandra Suárez, Form II Dean

Dear Parents,

On September 17, the Form II Retreat was held at Hockaday, marking the fourth and final grade-level retreat of the start of this school year. The members of the Class of 2019 brought their enthusiasm and energy that evening. The overall purpose of the retreat was to create space for the students to spend time together as a class outside of their academic courses, engage in  thoughtful conversations, and ensure the opportunity to let loose and have fun. One specific goal for the retreat was for the Class of 2019 to answer “Why is Form II important and special?,” and to brainstorm activities we can do during the school year that identify the class’ desire to impact the Hockaday community this year. In student-led groups, they collaboratively responded to questions regarding impact and purpose, and about fun activities that unite and describe them as a class. The “product” they left the retreat with was a “wordle”. It will serve to guide the group through the rest of this year; reminding them of their unity and positivity. Throughout the rest of the school year, Form II students, Form II advisors, and I will together consider how these words apply to the everyday experiences of the group and to the individuals within the class.

Of equal importance, the retreat was also a time to build relationships and have some fun outside of the academic day. The students organized a competitive “Crab Soccer” game, danced, and played games. At the end of the evening, students had the opportunity to share takeaways with the whole group. It was inspiring to hear them affirm one another, and I was truly impressed by their thoughtfulness, reflection, and desire to be their best selves. This overwhelmingly positive afternoon and evening together proved how beneficial and energizing it can be to spend time with others.

Sincerely,

Alejandra Suárez
Form II Dean
