Hockaday’s New Amphitheater to be Named for Margaret Doggett Crow ’37

Since the inception of the architectural renderings, one of the most highly-anticipated new spaces of The Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Family Center for the Arts has been the state-of-the-art amphitheater which will be named for alumna, former life trustee, and avid Hockaday supporter Margaret Doggett Crow ’37. Bringing new life to Hockaday’s performing arts program, the outdoor Margaret Doggett Crow Amphitheater will provide a new venue for the School’s productions and ceremonies, which will continue to be led by exemplary faculty members. Throughout her life, Margaret Crow served Hockaday with a lifelong commitment and an unparalleled passion for supporting the School. She was appointed to the School’s Board of Trustees in 1969, named a Life Trustee in 1981, and received the prestigious Hockaday Medal in 1991 from the Hockaday Alumnae Association. Mrs. Crow generously supported the School to recognize faculty, staff, and alumnae to ensure the full potential of each student that would carefully guide her intellectual and social development within the Four Cornerstones. Mrs. Crow passed away on April 11, 2014 after an extraordinary life filled with service, dedication, and guidance, but her Hockaday legacy will continue.

To honor Mrs. Crow, Kathy and Harlan Crow and their daughter Sarah, Class of 2021, named the Amphitheater for her and have commissioned a statue of Hypatia of Alexandria, sculpted by Jerry Williams, to be placed in the Margaret Doggett Crow Amphitheater. The Crow family chose to feature Hypatia because she was recognized as one of the strongest and most educated woman of the time. Hypatia of Alexandria was a Greco-Roman mathematician, astronomer, teacher, and philosopher in Egypt. She lived from c.355 ce – 415. The selection of Alexandria is a fitting tribute to all Hockaday students and alumnae.
