A Letter from Judy Ware

Everyone knows about “helicopter parents” and “tiger moms,” but this week, as Hockaday hosts the Common Ground Speaker Series on April 6 and 7, we will learn what it means to be “dolphin parents”—and it’s a good thing! Common Ground was created a few years ago by a consortium of 13 Dallas area private schools that come together each year to host an author talk for the consortium’s parents. This year’s selected author is Dr. Shimi Kang, an award-winning, Harvard-trained psychiatrist, researcher, media expert and lecturer on human motivation. Read More

Dr. Kang’s books are The Self-Motivated Kid and The Dolphin Way: A Parent’s Guide to Raising Healthy, Happy, and Motivated Kids Without Turning Into a Tiger, which became a #1 Canadian Bestseller and won the U.S. News International Book Award in 2015. Books will be available for purchase after each event, and Dr. Kang will autograph them upon request.

Internally driven by her own passion and purpose, Dr. Kang entered medical school at the age of 19, completed her fellowship at Harvard, and has excelled in diverse sectors such as medicine, management, publishing, as well as raising three children. In her presentations, Dr. Kang uses what she has learned from her own life experiences as the fifth child of immigrant parents, combined with her knowledge of neuroscience and behavioral research. All these form the foundation of her message that emphasizes the importance of developing self-motivation in children.

Dr. Kang will be speaking to parents in the Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Family Theater on Thursday evening, April 6, at 7 p.m. and again on Friday morning, April 7, at 9 a.m. Tickets are no longer available.
