A Message from Renee Laffitte

Join us in celebrating the themes that will guide the Upper School through the 2017-2018 school year.

We add 25 new students in 9th grade to the rising 8th grade class of 95-ish. All of them are new to Upper School. Therefore the theme is unity: creating the bond that will guide them through Upper School. The Form I retreat at Allaso Ranch allows the girls to experience difficult physical challenges while leaning on each other for support. Faculty will lead the small groups, strengthening the bond between the 9th graders and their advisors. Read More

This is reinforced throughout the year:
  • Watch out for you classmates – we’re all in this together
  • How can we include everyone?
  • Big/Lil Sis activities to connect with Seniors
Form II can be a very difficult year. Friend groups change; values systems are questioned; the girls have more independence and choices than ever before. This is universal among high schools: sophomore year is tough. To help our girls cope, we have invited My Name, My Story to lead a Changemaker Day here on campus. Adjustments among friend groups will occur, but by teaching the Form II theme of empathy in August and using that messaging throughout the year, we hope to frame these conflicts differently. Faculty will participate as well, giving them tools to be successful as sophomore advisors.

Form III are preparing to lead the school. They have some Upper School experience under their belt and teaching them their leadership style sets them up to for success as seniors. Through the Strengthfinders workshop, Juniors will identify their strengths and then help them understand how to use their natural talents to manage the JRP in the fall and beginning college process next spring. Faculty will learn their strengths as well.

The August retreat is when Form IV plans their Senior year, and maybe think through their legacy. They have spent four years preparing to be the leaders of the school, and they are now ready for action, the Form IV theme. In May, when they leave us, they will truly be poised to fulfill our mission statement and be women of purpose and impact. Senior advisors also attend the retreat.
