He currently serves on the board of directors at the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy and is the President of the Mindfulness in Education Network. During the event, Dr. Willard will share information about what mindfulness and SEL are and their proven benefits in a school setting. These benefits include healthier emotional well-being, greater focus, and reduced stress. Participants will learn about the neuroscience supporting mindfulness and how it strengthens the “executive decision-making” area of the brain and lessens the influence of the “fight or flight” response.

Dr. Julia Evans is a professor at the School of Behavior and Brain Sciences at UTD and a science advisor for DYC. Dr. Evans will explore the impact of stress on student productivity and how mindfulness plays a role in a student’s readiness to learn. Daniel Sunshine, director of DYC’s Mindfulness for Schools Initiative, will also join the event to share the details of the Lower School Mindfulness and SEL Program. Participants will experience multiple mindfulness exercises from the student curriculum including mindful breathing and listening. Come learn how Hockaday Lower School is equipping teachers and students with proven tools to find inner calm in the face of stressors inside and outside of school.

Additionally, to celebrate the lower school program launch, Hockaday and DYC are presenting the Raising Resilience in Dallas 4-day tour with Dr. Willard from September 13 to 16. The tour will provide multiple opportunities for educators, students, families, and counselors to deepen their knowledge of how mindfulness and SEL can be an effective tool for healthier emotional wellbeing and a more resilient life. The main event titled Raising Resilience for Educators will feature a talk with Dr. Willard from 7:00 – 9:00 pm on September 14 at the Dallas Yoga Center. The talk will include honored guests from a range of north, south, east and west Dallas schools. For more information, visit dallasyogacenter.com/drwillard.
