A Letter from Laura Day

Hello Upper School Parents,

I am honored to be able to address you all and share with you the work and education we are doing with your children. In my office of
Service Learning I focus on making real world impact and being topical about issues we discuss or work with. We are currently working in DISD to address the third grade reading gap, at various farms in South Dallas food deserts and lately have been talking about and serving communities affected by the many natural disasters. Below I am including a letter I sent to our Upper School students and faculty in response to the events taking place over the past month. As a school we continue to educate our students to lead lives of purpose and impact. We will continue to work together as an Upper School to learn about social problems and collectively work to address them. Thank you for your commitment to the great work our students are doing.

Hello,

The past months, weeks and days have been filled with unimaginable events that have impacted families, friends and humanity resulting in unfathomable and life-changing circumstances, which are difficult to understand. I watch these events unfold daily and feel immense amounts of empathy for those who have been affected, and I know many of you feel the same.

I recently reminded some students that in hard times like these, I recall the Mr. Rogers’ quote over and over in my head, "When I was a boy, and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me,‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”
Below I wanted to give a few short ideas to help guide you as you continue to walk through these events.
·         Be Honest - It's okay and important for you to share and be comfortable about how you feel.
·         Be Informed - Staying informed can empower you to help.
·         Be Active - Be helpful in the way needed by the community affected. Help in the way that works for you.

Ways to get involved:
3.      Awareness – Read articles, watch videos, and share helpful, inspiring things with your friends and family.

Please feel free to come by my office to learn about ways or brainstorm ways to help.
