Our First Lego League Robotics teams competed last Saturday in the first round of that annual competition. Our girls went up against thirty-six groups in the North Texas Regional Qualifier at Williams High School in Plano. They participated in robot games and presented an oral research project during the competition. They were also judged on sportsmanship and robot design. Out of all thirty-six teams, the top ten teams advance, and three major category awards are given. We have two teams advancing and one team who just missed the cutoff. We also won two of the major awards. Nina Dave, Riya Guttigoli, Anisha Sharma, Stella Wrubel, and Sophia Yung of Team ‘Hockabots’ won the Robot Design award. This award recognizes a team that designs a mechanically sound robot, uses outstanding programming principles, and utilizes a well-developed strategy to design and build an innovative, high performing robot. They have advanced to the super qualifier that will be held on January 20. Jayna Dave, Grace Dorward, Tarini Gupta, Juliana Lu, and Ashna Tambe of Team ‘Hocka ‘scuse me’ won the Core Values award. This award recognizes a team whose members show strong communication, effective problem solving, excellent time management, as well as extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit. They have also advanced to the super qualifier on January 20. Paige Glowacki, Sydney Slay, Ayla Sumer, Emery Stehel, and Helen Taylor of Team ‘Bionic Daisies’ placed 5th in the robot game. They also had an outstanding day. I extend a deep appreciation to Laura Baker and Lisa Dwinal who have guided the girls through both the preparation for this event and the actual competition, even spending extra hours on weekends and after school. Thank you also to our volunteer parents who helped support the coaches and girls last Saturday. |
