Middle School

Message from the Head of Middle School

Constant curiosity, unbridled enthusiasm, and endless energy envelop me each day in the Hockaday Middle School. Both faculty and administrators center our own energy and passion on helping each student develop five skills: finding joy in the learning process; viewing challenges as opportunities, understanding HOW she learns; understanding the connections between content she is taught and the implementation of those skills in her daily life; and moving forward in life with a sense of honor and respect. Our Middle School teachers excel in building a program that focuses on the relationships and exploration needed to reach those goals.

Classes are structured to allow for variety in teaching styles, assignments, and assessments, to build a foundation of active engagement between students and their teachers, to offer both collaborative and independent learning opportunities to each student, to provide time for thoughtful reflection and processing, and, most importantly, to design developmentally appropriate courses and experiences for each cognitive and emotional stage in a Middle School student’s life.

The program highlights creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, challenge and fun! Throughout our six-day rotation, our girls enjoy classes in English, mathematics, history, world languages, science, physical education, and fine arts, all of which incorporate critical thinking, effective study skills, and meaningful, productive collaboration with peers. We also offer our girls a wide menu of elective explorations, after-school athletics in grades seven and eight, a vibrant advisory program, service learning opportunities, and our Cornerstones Studies Program which asks students to reflect and identify the intricacies of character and courtesy. In all instances, Middle School students are offered opportunities to explore, “try things on,” and take risks.

Our successful Middle School education is a blend of rigorous content, experiential learning, a sense of community responsibility and respect, and the core of all we are about in MS –productive relationships. I am proud that we as Middle School educators share in our girls’ journeys as they try out and define emerging versions of themselves.

Sincerely,

Linda Kramer
