A Message from the HPA President

Dear Hockaday Parents,

It is hard to believe that 2016 is winding down! As we all look forward to some well deserved time with family, I’d like to take a moment to thank the parents who work so hard, often behind the scenes, to help make Hockaday’s community so vibrant. Read more

I’d like to offer a special THANK YOU to…
Our Faculty appreciation chairs Eryn Sporl, Candace Swango, Kristin Rees, and Kelly Doan and the burgeoning list of parent volunteers who work weekly to show our faculty and staff how much we appreciate and adore them. During the holiday season we especially appreciate the extra special touches that are incorporated into the food and gifts that are delivered.

Grade Reps and all of the parents who coordinated such fun Holiday events in Lower School and to parents in all grades who opened their homes to host such wonderful parent events throughout the fall.

Donna Carlisle, Squeaky Connolly, and Middle School Advisory parents for helping to support the Middle School Holiday Bazaar. The bazaar is a wonderful service tradition, led by the Middle School Student Council, which would not be the same without these parent volunteers behind the scenes.

All Lower School parents who helped support the fabulously successful 2016 Day of Service. From bringing donations to sorting materials to grade level coordination to project support in the classroom, every bit of time and effort expended was greatly appreciated. I’d like to offer a very special thank you to Carla Bolden for organizing all of the volunteers flawlessly!

HPA Meeting recap…
I hope you were able to join us on Wednesday, December 7 to hear from Michelle Kinder, Executive Director, Momentous Institute who shared with us Brain Based Strategies for Social Emotional Health. Michelle’s session was wonderfully informative and I feel like I could have listened to her expert advice for another hour! If you missed the event (or missed the handouts), you can find her supplemental materials posted on the Resource Board, on the Parent Speaker Series page. You can also find an informative blog and easy to digest tips on the Momentous Institute website.

SAVE the date…
On Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 8:15-9:30, the Parents’ Associations of Hockaday and St. Mark’s will join together at Hockaday for a panel discussing “Putting the “A” in STEAM”. The panelists include Dhruba Deb, Ph.D., oncology scientist and artist; David Hudgins, award-winning screenwriter and TV producer; Nancy A. Nasher, NorthPark Center owner and art collector; Stuart Ravnik, Ph.D. – Biomedical scientist, UT Southwestern associate dean and science education innovator; and, moderator and veteran journalist Lee Cullum. At the end of the meeting each school will present and vote on their respective 2017-2018 Parents’ Association Executive Committee slate. Register here

As gifts are given and received this holiday season, I think of the gift of our parent community. Thank you to each and every one of you for helping to make Hockaday the special place that it is! I wish you all a joyful and rejuvenating holiday!

Warm Regards,

Katharine Friguletto
HPA President, 2016-2017
