Teacher Partners with Smithsonian

Upper School teacher Kristen Blevins spoke at the Smithsonian National Education Summit in Washington D.C. this summer in collaboration with an ongoing partnership she has developed with the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum.
She presented with former Hockaday English teacher Dr. Summer Hamilton and curator Dr. Rachel Seidman on their new oral history project called "We Do Declare: Women's Voices on Financial Independence."
The museum is collecting a series of oral histories about women's economic power, and Ms. Blevins presented on how she incorporates these oral histories in her Financial Literacy class at Hockaday.
“Getting students comfortable with having conversations about money is going to benefit them in the long run,” said Ms. Blevins. “As they learn about other people’s experiences with money, they’re building empathy with their peers and adults in their lives.”
