Third Grade Learns About Native American Heritage Month

Third Grade students tied art and outdoor learning into a social studies unit on Native American Heritage Month!
Mrs. Gomez’s class has been learning about the arrival of settlers in America from a Native perspective and visited the library to read the book Keepunumuk, which teaches from this perspective. Mrs. Dutcher excerpted a section of the book Braiding Sweetgrass to tie into their learning, which teaches about Native agricultural practices like the Three Sisters method of planting and connects the practice to the idea of reciprocity. The girls used the idea of reciprocity as a lens for their drawing while they created painted wooden tiles to turn into an art installation for the Lower School garden.
