Fourth Grade Purpose and Impact Classes
Rooted in Hockaday’s Mission and the Lower School Outcomes of wonder, agency, collaboration, and resilience, Fourth Grade students now take special Purpose and Impact Classes (PICs).
Each PIC deepens a foundational academic skill, gives students a meaningful experience of leading a life of purpose and impact, or both. Classes are team-taught by at least two faculty members and capped at 12 students.
Current and upcoming classes include marine biology, coding, journalism, the science of cooking, and public speaking. Recently, students in Culinary Chemistry predicted what happens when they mixed oil and vinegar, and then saw how mustard acted as an emulsifier to keep the two liquids together. They then made their own individual salads and salad dressings!
In Journalism, Fourth Graders headed to the LLARC to visit with Upper School members of Forecast, the student newspaper, to learn more about how to put together their own publication!
