Hockaday Math Club Competes at Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament

On February 10, the Hockaday Math Club brought a team of eight girls (Kelsey Chen, Hope Fu, Effie Guo, Elizabeth Guo, Lin Lin Lee, Clara Shi, Angelina Wu, and Jennifer Xiong) to participate in the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT) in Cambridge, MA.  HMMT is one of the hardest and most rigorous international mathematics competitions, and the girls took a full day of math tests (3 challenging sixty-minute individual tests, 1 sixty-minute proof-based team test, and 1 ninety-minute guts round competition).

Many schools applied last October to attend the competition, and the Hockaday Math Club was excited to that the HMMT committee accepted them for the third year.  There were 90 teams, some recruiting from various schools, that participated from all over the world, and Hockaday was the only all-girls mathematics team.  For sweepstakes, Hockaday earned 58th overall, beating 32 teams!  For individual scoring, Clara Shi and Lin Lin Lee placed in the top half of all the individuals (total of 674 individuals competed).  Hockaday placed 53rd for the Team Round. Congratulations to the girls for their success in solving the thought-provoking and challenging problems!
